Hemmings Motor News Great Race
June 23rd to July 1st
The Great Race is returning to Canada June 24th to 27th.
Departures start in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan the morning of Sunday the 24th at 7:30. Event organizers have worked with the Canadian Border Services to expedite the border crossing into Canada. Don't you wish you could do that? Teams will cross the border first. The support vehicles come through after. To those in the Soo, if you see the trucks, you missed it!
From here the rally is off to Elliot Lake for a lunch stop at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 561, 10 Veteran's Way (aka Alberta Rd). Teams will be arriving about noon.
Departing Elliot Lake, teams will rally to the dinner stop at the A&W on Long Lake Rd. in Sudbury. Arrivals are scheduled around 4 PM. It is an A&W so there has to be a cruise night. This will be the overnight stop for the day.
Monday morning, the 25th, teams will depart Sudbury for Parry Sound at 8 AM. Here is the lunch stop at the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts, 2 Bay St. This event is scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM. Early lunch but it is a very direct route from Sudbury to Parry Sound.
Departing from here teams make their way to Barrie for the overnight stop at Heritage Park, downtown. Teams are set to arrive about 4:30 PM. I would love it if they came via the Upper Big Chute Rd or the roads around it.
Tuesday morning, 7:30 AM, the 25th, teams will depart for the morning stage to the lunch stop at Zurakowski Park, Downtown Barrys Bay. Teams are scheduled to arrive about 11:30 AM
The afternoon stage will take teams to the Hazeldean Mall in Kanata. Arrival time is about 4:30 PM. The Hazeldean Mall is a centre of cruise night activity in the Ottawa area, so expect a cruise night!
Overnighting in Kanata, the rally departs Wednesday morning at 8 AM for the morning stage and lunch in Kingston's Confederation Park. Teams are expected around the noon hour.
From here the rally departs for the border and their overnighter at the Watertown NY Fairgrounds. Arrivals expected starting at 4:30 PM. The Antique Boat Museum, Clayton, New York is the pit stop in this rally. I can see this economically as everything is cheaper to fix in the States. :o)
Those are the Canadian waypoints on this year's Hemmings Motor News Great Race. The start, finish and south of the lakes stages of the rally are not far over the border.
The Great Race starts in Traverse City Michigan the morning of Saturday June 23rd. Starting ceremony begins at 9:30 AM on Front St., downtown. The first day's lunch is at St. Ignace and the overnight stop is Sault Ste. Marie Michigan.
After the Canadian stages the Great Race departs Watertown New York, it travels to Fairport and Buffalo New York on Thursday June 28th, then to Franklin Pennsylvania and Warren Ohio on Friday June 29th. June 30th the rally travels to Mansfield and Findlay Ohio.
The last day, July 1st, the rally departs Findlay Ohio for the lunch stop at the Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum in Ypsilanti Michigan, then completes the last stages and ends at the Henry Ford and Greenfield Village in Dearborn Michigan.
The main site for the Great Race is: http://www.greatrace.com/. Details can be found at this site and a link to their Facebook site. There may be more information available as time goes on.
I don't have details on the stages. I may not have the opportunity to see details, as they probably will come out only before staging starts.
Get out and enjoy this event if you can. I hope to catch it north of Barrie on one of those great back roads then downtown at Heritage Park.

My First Event Submission
Earlier this week I received my first ever event submission! I did not have to search through numerous websites to get this one. It came to me!
Thanks to John for finding me, and submitting this event.
You too can inform me of a car event.
John sent me information on his event in an e-mail and I typed up the listing you see above. It is very basic because I don't have the time to make up an extravegant notice.
You can send me an internet address I can link back to for event information.
You can send me a PDF or a scan of an event flyer I can load at this site.
Event notices are free!
Have Fun!

Great Race Returns to Canada
This year the round the Lower Great Lakes Route will take the race along Hwy 17 from Sault Ste. Marie to Sudbury, south on Hwy 69 and 400 to Barrie. The route then takes them east to Ottawa. The last day (in Ontario), the route turns south to Kingston, crossing to Clayton NY for an overnight stop.
From the Great Race website, "The Great Race is an antique, vintage, and collector car competitive controlled-speed endurance road rally on public highways. It is not a test of top speed. It is a test of a driver/navigator team’s ability to follow precise course instructions and the car’s (and team’s) ability to endure on a cross-country trip. The course instructions require the competing teams to drive at or below the posted speed limits at all times".
This is a great opportunity for those across the Nickle Belt, Georgian Bay, Kawarthas, and Eastern Ontario to see a great rolling car show or get up close and personal at the lunch or overnight stops.
The schedule may change. Keep an eye on http://www.greatrace.com/ for any new information and updates. This site also has a wealth of blogs, and information.

I guess I should poke out my head
Events listings have been coming out since January, I have been doing my best to keep up with them. March is here, which will only accelerate the pace of event listing.
I am here and still listing.
Send me stuff and I will post it!

Marmota Monax, Weather Prognosticator
Remember!
Don't Drive Angry
Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is the home of Marmot weather forcasting since 1887. At 7:20 AM Punxsutawney Phil is to emerge from his home, gaze about, and determine if his shadow is visible.
In Wiarton, Ontario, Wiarton Willie has been forcasting winter's end for many years. Every few years the Groundhog shadow cabinet looks for the next incarnation of Willie. This is much like Tibetan Monks looking for incarnations of the Dalai Lama.
Shubenacadie Sam lives in the Shubenacadie Provinical Wildlife Park in Shubenacadie Nova Scotia. Because of the Atlantic time zone he and his Cape Breton competitor, Two Rivers Tunnel of Mira River NS are the first to give their learned opinion.
Balzac Billy lives in Balzac Alberta. He holds the fate of southern Albertans in the palm of his... paw.
|
|
Punxsutawney Phil
|
Phil saw his shadow, and many more of them. Six more weeks of winter for Pennsylvania. Is this multiplied by the number of extra shadows?
|
|
Wiarton Willie
|
No shadow, an early spring coming. We'll see when Ancaster comes around.
|
|
Shubenacadie Sam
|
No shadow, an early spring. But isn't spring like winter only warmer?
|
|
Two Rivers Tunnel
|
No shadow, an early spring. This guy must be grumpy before his morning coffee. He does not get up 'til 11 AM local. At 11:20, local, he made this prediction in front of somewhere between 70 and 80 onlookers.
|
|
Balzac Billy
|
At 8:12 MST this morning Balzac Billy emerged from his burrow and put on his sunglasses, indicating 6 more weeks of winter. I wonder if this is a mixed message. Calgary has not been doing too bad this winter. Sunglasses could mean sunny, sunny weather!

Happy New Year!
It is a new year with new events cruises and many more things to do.
I have made my first run through of events. Some dates are made, many others are not.
If I have a date, I entered it. If no date is given I have it listed as "Early", "Mid", or "Late" and the month. This is based on the event from 2011.
Similarly if the event is on Father's Day or Canada Day I have it down as that. I am not quite as sure about Labour Day, or if every province has the first Monday in August as a holiday.
I have added quick links at the top of the "Car Clubs", "Car Shows & Swap Meets" and "Cruise Nights" pages to aid in navigation.
As always, if there is an event missing let me know. I am open to all corrections, and additons.
D.W.
